The Grant J. Hunt Company works with you from January-December to supply the most delicious apples available. Sometimes this means you stick with the tried and true varieties and really try to push on those categories. Other times we help you create excitement with the newer varieties and of course there is always room for the niche varieties which provide unique opportunities in your department. Whatever your apple needs are, the Grant J. Hunt team is knowledgeable on domestic and imported apples and can supply category management to help you maximize your program. Here is a brief rundown on some of the primary varieties we have available.
Red Delicious

The Grant J. Hunt Company supplies red delicious apples year round. You know the apple, do you know how we can help you with your category management? The red should be an exciting part of your apple plan. Reds remain a favorite with their crisp crunch and mild sweetness.
Golden Delicious
Golden Delicious
A consumer favorite with their unique flesh and a great eating experience. Many people prefer goldens because of their thin skin and sweetness. A must in your salads and great for baking.
Available year round.
Gala
Gala
The gala is a consumer favorite with their crisp and sweet flavor. Slightly smaller in size, galas also are great for kids lunches and snacking. Grant J. Hunt can help you build a program to capitalize on this apples strengths.
Available from early August harvest until May/June
MacIntosh
Often thought of as an Eastern apple, Grant J. Hunt offers a nice selection of BC grown Macs. Of course Macs are known for their bright white flesh and super juicy crunch.
Available from September harvest until May.
Braeburn
Braeburn
The braeburn deserves more space on your produce shelves. A little promotion goes a long way for this great variety with the ‘spicy’ flavor.
Available from October harvest until July.
Jonagold
Jonagold
Bi-colored (orange/red over a yellow background) and tangy sweet, jonagold is actually the favorite apple in many parts of the US and is very popular in Europe.
Available from September harvest until April.
Newton
Newtown
A seasonal apple that can be celebrated as such. Particularly popular in the south. Grant J. Hunt has both yellow and green Newtowns available. Sometimes referred to as a Newtown Pippin or simply a pippin. Newtowns are generally a large apple and have pink/red near the stem.
Spartans
A delicious all-purpose apple with bright-white flesh and a small core. Which means you enjoy more of the apple! A unique, sweet flavor and is great for cooking.
Available October through July.
York
Primarily an Eastern apple known for its intense tart/sweet flavor, firm flesh and distinctive lop-sided shape.† Great for a ‘seasonal’ apple program.
Available from mid-October through February.
Red Rome
Red Rome
Big and beautiful, the lovely Red Rome apple offers a rather non-descript slightly tart subtle flavor when eaten fresh, but when cooked or baked, this apple's insipid flavor comes to life and magically becomes deilicously rich. Its creamy flesh shows off a pretty pink blush.
Available from September/October through April
EMPIRE
Crunch into an empire apple and you see why it is recognized for its great flavor. Smooth, white skin and a tart/sweet flavor empires are a favorite with kids, especially the smaller sizes.
Granny Smith
Granny Smith
The most popular tart apple. Delicious and a favorite with kids, Grant J. Hunt has a year round supply of this unique apple. Granny Smith also works as a great natural color break in your apple displays to separate some of your red varietal mix.
Available year round.
Mutsu
Also known as a Crispin is some parts of Northern America. Mutsu apples grow quite large and are often a meal themselves. They tend to have Greenish-yellow skin with orange blush; white flesh; and the flavor ranges from tart to sweet taste; firm. A ripe Mutsu will almost have a cider flavor.

Elstar
Elstar
The Elstar is a medium to large round apple with attractive red stripes over a yellow background. The crisp, firm, cream colored flesh has a sweet-tart flavor. Because of its flavor, texture and appearance, Elstar is a very good all-purpose apple.
Ambrosia
A flavor and eating experience that can only be described as ‘smooth’. The creamy texture gives way to a nice sweet crunch. Works great as a "seasonal" apple to create excitement in your category.

PinkLady
Pink Lady®

The Pink Lady® is a sweet tart treat and is the only "pink apple, easily differentiating this unique piece of fruit from its bicolored cousins. A favorite with bakers and great in salads because they tend to brown slower than other varieties.
Available: November - April
Cameo
Cameo
The Cameo variety is a hearty, all-around apple with a deep juicy flavor and a crisp crunch that makes it the perfect eating apple. It is colored with a red stripe over a creamy background.
Available: October-May
